Gymnastics Australia’s Education Framework

Gymnastics is a unique sport and therefore requires guidelines to ensure the intended activities of the sport are covered within the scope of insurance. Gymnastics Australia’s Education Framework provides the basis upon which the sport of gymnastics is defined within Australia. It is therefore used as a guide to determine the scope of cover within the National Insurance Program.

JLT Sport will continue to consult with Gymnastics Australia and the Insurer to determine the scope of cover within the National Insurance Program. Please contact JLT Sport for clarification if you believe your club or coach activities may fall beyond the scope of cover.

Please visit Gymnastics Australia’s web site for more details regarding the Education Framework and required coaching competencies.

Technical Membership

Technical Membership is a special category of membership with Gymnastics Australia. This membership is offered to coaches and judges who have successfully completed required competencies by attending one of Gymnastics Australia’s accreditation courses in Coaching or Judging. For more information on the type of courses available and the next courses conducted in your state, please visit Gymnastics Australia or contact your State Gymnastic Association.

Technical Members are entitled to Personal Accident and General Liability Insurance (including Professional Indemnity) through the National Risk Protection Insurance Program. This cover is a benefit of annual membership with Gymnastics Australia.

If your Technical Membership has lapsed, please contact Gymnastics Australia immediately as you will not by covered under the National Insurance Program.

For further information regarding Technical Membership please visit Gymnastics Australia’s Technical Membership page.

Managing the Risks of Coaching (MRC)

Gymnastics Australia is committed to providing a sporting environment which is safe, stable and free of discrimination or harassment and in which risks are minimised through proactive management.

In June 2005, Gymnastics Australia launched the Managing the Risks of Coaching resource (MRC). The resource focuses on how coaches, judges and administrators of gymnastics clubs and associations can identify and manage risk within the sport. It will also provide clubs and coaches with a greater awareness of risks associated with coaching and facilitate better management of these risks.

The resource provides:

  • An awareness of the variety of roles that can be played in managing the risks associated with coaching
  • Reduces the likelihood of litigation
  • Reduces the likelihood of injury/damage to athletes and others

Whilst the resource focuses on managing the risks from a coaching perspective, it has “good practice” messages for all personnel involved in the sport. It has been clearly shown across a variety of industries, including sport, that a blend of common sense and strategic actions can help keep people safe and ensure enjoyable experiences for all participants.

The MRC forms part of Gymnastics Australia’s commitment to risk management and is fully supported by both Boards and management of Gymnastics Australia and Association Members. As such, Gymnastics Australia has made successful completion of the MRC (certification), a compulsory requirement for all Technical members by 1st January 2007.
